Sasan Gir, located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat, India, is renowned as the last natural habitat of the majestic Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica). Encompassing an area of approximately 1,410 square kilometers, the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1965 to protect these endangered big cats. Their settlements, known as ‘nesses,’ are scattered throughout the forest. Another unique community is the Siddis, descendants of African migrants, residing in the village of Jambur. They are known for their vibrant ‘Siddi Dhamal’ dance, a blend of African and Indian traditions.
Visitors to Sasan Gir can embark on the Gir Jungle Trail, a guided safari offering close encounters with the park’s wildlife. The Devaliya Safari Park, an interpretation zone, provides a more controlled environment to observe animals. Other attractions include the Kamleshwar Dam, a vital water source within the park, and the Kankai Mata Temple, a revered pilgrimage site nestled amidst the forest.
